Kanchan Chander Indian, b. 1957

Born 1957 in New Delhi, Kanchan studied art in her Foundation Year at Weisensee Kunst Hochschule in Berlin and BFA in painting and printmaking from Delhi College of Art, New Delhi.

Kanchan's works are of the domestic centricity of feminine experience, of an iconic feminine energy, and of her easy appropriation of the idea of the mythic divine feminine. The Devi and the torso become common themes throughout her artwork. Brightly painted, monumental and bedecked with sequins, silver leaf and beads. Her works celebrate the fertile, the erotic and the sensuousness of the female form. Luminous cerulean blues, yellows and bright reds make the surface vibrant. Kanchan's personal lifescape, dilemmas, conflicts, joys and aches screened through subjective distortions inject substance into her art. Kanchan's works are in the collection of the Nation Gallery Modern Art, Delhi; Mumbai International Airport and Kiran Nadar Collection to name a few. She lives and works in New Delhi.
